Investigate the Windsong Abbey – find the next shard
Return Zolarem the Head Priest to Magnimar
Capture Ardathanatus so he can be redeemed

After a well-rested night in the temple of Sarendae, the party ventured down to the next level via the stairs to the east. A long hallway leading north led to a small room with three other exits. Large basalt azure panels depicting sea-life and merfolk adorned the walls and standing in one corner stood a crystal lamp burning with blue light. Ashelin determined the lamp contained a continual flame spell so the party pocketed the valuable magical device. Heading east the party found a closed door, behind with Bethany detected the sound of crackling flame. The door opened to reveal a large firepit that was being used as a forge by an efreeti who was just finishing a piece of plate armor as the group entered. About the room there were also several salamanders. Ashelin stepped forward and addressed the efreeti in its native language. The efreeti looked up from its labour and sighed, saying. “I have only one more day here. Leave now without a fuss and I won’t be forced to burn you to death.”
At the party’s puzzled looks the efreeti added. “I have been bound here, leave me be and I won’t be forced to do something you would regret.”
Viekko then stepped forward and offered. “What if I sent you home to your natural plane now?”
The efreeti agreed to the plan and so Viekko used a spell to dismiss the outsider. As the efreeti faded from sight, the salamanders shook their heads as if waking from a dream, noticed the party and attacked. After a short battle, the salamanders were defeated and the party claimed the finished armour the efreeti had been crafting as battle loot. The armour had been crafted from a very rare material called Horacalcum and was quite valuable.

Heading north from the blue panel room another closed door opened on a dusty store room filled with empty crates and folded sacks. Ashelin looked for traces of magic and detected several jars that had a magical aura. The mage determined the objects were soul jars and contained the essence of creatures whose souls had been stolen and placed in the jars. The group collected several jars and stored them away for later study. As the adventurers left the store room, a creature that appeared to be a ragged old woman dressed in tattered rags stepped forward and demanded. “Return my property.”
Realising they were facing a Night Hag, the party attacked and a fierce battle erupted. The hag tossed several spells around including a nasty lightning bolt that hot everyone except Laneth and a stinking cloud that made Laneth and Keen Ears sick. After being hacked and slashed by Laneth and Bethany, as well as filled full of arrows by Keen Ears, all to the comedy stylings of wise-cracking Nick, the hag finally succumbed to a well-placed flurry of magic missiles, the bread and butter of any battle mage. As the hag collapsed, the party looted several more jars from the corpse and proceeded to smash them and release all of the trapped souls so they could go on to the after-life. The adventurers also recovered the hag’s heart stone and an unholy magical dagger.

Investigate the Windsong Abbey – find the next shard
Return Zolarem the Head Priest to Magnimar
Capture Ardathanatus so he can be redeemed

Session Summary:
Having defeated the Elemental the group continued around the north running hallway and found a series of seven doors. Laneth crept forward and listened at each door, hearing the snoring coming from several of the rooms. Heading back to the first door, Laneth silently entered the room and discovered a sleeping figure dressed in tattered rags lying on a bed in the corner of the room. Holding a knife to the sleeper’s throat Laneth tried to rouse him and keep him quiet, but as soon as he opened his eyes, he screamed “Intruders! Intruders!” at the top of his lungs and rolled away from Laneth’s knife slash. The sleeping man then stood up taking a slash from Laneth’s knife and then transformed into a werebear. Bethany noticed this through the open doorway and rushed in hacking the creature down viciously. Thinking quickly, Laneth rushed outside the door and down the hallway, ducking into one of the doors near the end of the hall and closing the door behind her. Not long after Laneth had disappeared into the room, another werebear burst from the second door, followed by two more, filling the hallway. Laneth then appeared from the far room, which has been empty and approached the werebears from behind. As the werebears had decided to line themselves up nicely in the hallway, Ashelin calmly retrieved her wand of lightning bolt and fired it down the hallway, at the werebears. Bethany avoided most of the lightning bolt, while Laneth at the end of the hall deftly ducked out of the way of the sizzling magic. The sneaky elf then used her magical talent to vanish and became invisible. Bethany then hacked her way through the bears while Ashelin and Keen provided ranged support. One of the bears managed to bite Bethany, but in her enraged state, she shook off the bite and avoided any ill effects (much to the vexation of the GM). Soon all of the bears were defeated.

An invisible Laneth moved to the last door at the end of the hallway and opened it to reveal an armoury. Within the room was a pair of creatures with four tentacle suckered arms ending in pincers and a gaping maw. The creatures were so fascinating that Laneth just stood there in the doorway staring at them. The rest of the party approached and Ashelin recognised them as Shoggi demons. Bethany ran forward and engaged one of the shoggi which in response reached out bypassing her defences and touched the barbarian with one of its tentacles sapping her will. Laneth then reappeared in the doorway, staring mutely at the shoggi so Ashelin shook her to wake her from the fascination. Bethany hacked one of the shoggi with her sword, and then stepped up to the second one. Keen Ears stepped into the doorway and avoided the fascinating aura of the shoggi. The archer filled the shoggi full of arrows but appeared to do little damage. Laneth tumbled in behind the shoggi and sliced it while Ashelin finished it off with a wand of magic missile. After the battle the adventurers searched the armoury and uncovered a small number of magical arrows that would be effective against undead creatures. Keen Ears gratefully added them to his stockpile. Ashelin then used a wand of false life to give Bethany a boost of health as the barbarian was in rough shape. Further investigation of the dungeon level revealed a starway leading back up to the higher level and a pair of double doors. Laneth opened to the doors and found a large chamber with gusts of winds coming from holes in the west wall. The other walls of the room were carved with birds with long tail feathers and musical notations. In the south end of the room stood a badly defaced statue of an angel with butterfly wings carved into the alcove. Shuffling around the room was a tentacle-armed creature called a chernobue. The chernobue noticed the group and moved forward grinning evilly at the adventurers, paralysing Ashelin, Bethany and Keen Ears with its disgusting aura. Laneth didn’t notice the rest of her companions were frozen and ran in behind the creature and attacked it. The chernobue turned towards the elf and slammed her with its tentacles. Laneth wisely decided to retreat and check out her companions. The chernobue approached but could not leave the chamber. It struck at the frozen adventurers with a chaos hammer, but the spell was ineffective against the party. A long minute later the party shook off the paralysis but still faced the disgusting aura of the chernobue. Bethany became enraged and shook off the effects, while Ashelin also was unaffected. Keen Ears froze one again but was revived when Ashelin cast protection from evil which also meant the party could not be paralysed again but the chernobue. The party then surrounded the chernobue and sought to defeat it with might and magic. The chernobue poisoned Bethany with its bite, but was soon reduced to a quivering pile of goo. The group then recalled a conversation they had earlier with Casamir, regarding a hidden cache of magic in this room. The party searched the altar and discovered a wand, several scrolls and a ring.

a wand of restoration – 9 charges
a scroll of break enchantment
a scroll of resurrection
a scroll of wind walk
a ring of spell storing – breath of life – cure light wounds

The party badly needed to rest and recover, and soon found the ideal place when they moved north and found another smaller altar room that had strangely left untouched and not defaced like the others they had found. This square room was filled with tapestries and a window with a statue of a kneeling woman in front of it. Ashelin recognized the statue was of Serendae, and was contemplating the setting of the sun. The group decided this was a good place to rest and felt more invigorated the longer they stayed. While sleeping in the temple, the party received a vision of Ardathanatus writing in agony and realised that they should not kill him, but capture him instead as there was a chance he could be redeemed.

Here we paused to rest and recover.

Session Notes
The second Doomsday door looked exactly the same as the first so the party tried using the same combination and the door opened to reveal a chamber beyond. Within this new room was a stairway leading down into darkness and opposite the stair was a recessed alcove holding a stone pedestal. Upon the pedestal stood a flickering globe that changed as Viekko approached it into the image of a moon with a skull face on it. Viekko called in Ashelin to consult on the religious symbology of the moon and skull and decided this crystal ball was an icon of Groetus, the god of the end times.

Icon_of_Groetus.jpg

The icon is said to form a window allowing powerful priest of Groetus to look through. Viekko decided remove the crystal and placed it in a bag to shield the party from any observers. Before venturing downstairs however, the party decided to explore the rest of the current floor and continued east and then south along a hallway. At the end of the southern hall was a storage room which was full of lumber and covered in dust, showing no one had been this way in a long time. Turning north the group found another twisting path that went east and then south and ended in a brick wall that looked newer than the surrounding stone. Bethany decided to investigate and so called on her rage enhanced strength to break through the flimsy brick wall. Beyond however was a shaft with a spike lined floor. This appeared to be the bottom of the pit trap that Laneth had found in the temple. Turning back north the party discovered a door that was cold to the touch and quite stuck. Once again using her great strength Bethany forced the door which opened upon a cold storage room containing boxes of frozen meat and other goods. Inside the room were four statues which came to life when Laneth and Ashelin decided to investigate. The battle was short lived however as Ashelin blasted the room with a powerful fireball that missed her friends, but took down the four ice statues in a single blast. Unfortunately the blast also partially defrosted the stored goods and the concussion wave pushed Bethany down the hallway. The party closed the door on the now ruined freezer and returned to the Dooms day door. Viekko decided on the way back to drop of the crystal ball in the bottom of the spike trap and as he left said cheerfully “See you soon.”

At the top of the stair Viekko used his power to channel healing energy into the group and so feeling revived, the party headed down stairs into the darkness. A short hallway led to a wider passage leading north. Not far ahead the party found a large chamber lit by four braziers at each corner. The walls of the chamber were carved into an elaborate fresco depicting many people queued and waiting to approach a blindfolded man twice as tall as any other. A long scroll extended from the figure’s mouth and unfurled across the landscape. Ashelin took out her drawing supplies and tried to sketch the images while Nick recalled from his bardic training that the figure was a priest of Groetus whi later became a herald of Groetus. The fresco appeared to be over 10,000 years old and covered an ancient prophesy. Ashelin realised the writing in the fresco was a type of spell but was unable to determine what the spell might be, only that is was very powerful. Continuing north the group found another chamber with stairs leading down. The walls of this chamber appeared to be a ruined temple much larger than the space of the actual walls. The optical illusion was very convincing and it took a while for the group to notice a crab-like creature huddled on the stairs. Ashelin recognised the creature as a demon Gongorinan. Keen Ears checked his bow and then unleaded a volley of arrows at the creature though most seemed to bounce off the creature’s tough hide. The demon then scuttled forward and its hideous presence caused confusion amongst everyone in the party except for Laneth and Bethany. The creature also decided to sting Keen ears for good measure. While Laneth, Bethany and Keen ears continued to hack away at the demon crab, Nick and Ashelin in their confused state started attacking each other, while Viekko alternated between babbling incoherently and punching himself in the face. Even after the crab was defeated the group were still confused, and still trying their best to kill each other. Bethany attempted to grapple Keen Ears to prevent him from shooting anyone but failed and took a barrage of arrows for her trouble. Bethany then decided to grapple Nick as the bard had scored some wicked hits against Ashelin, which also affected Viekko through his magical bond. After several agonising seconds the group were able to shake off the confusion and Viekko once again dished out more healing magic.

A door to the north of the chamber opened onto a dusty Apothocarium workroom where a quick search turned up 1200 gold pieces of components and tools. On a small shelf Nick also discovered a Philosopher’s Stone, which Ashelin announced was quite valuable. Returning to the brazier room the group headed east and found another room carved with an optical illusion, this time the image was of pillars heading off into the distance. Another set of stairs led down into darkness, and once again the group found themselves facing another demon Gongorinan. Keen Ears readied his bow and started shooting the crab. Viekko called upon his divine magic to blast the creature with holy fire, although most of the damage was ignored. Laneth tumbled in behind the creature and hacked away with her elven curved blade. Unfortunately Bethany was confused by the creature’s hideous appearance, but a quick thinking Viekko slapped the barbarian and kept her attention focused on him while the rest of the party took care of the demon. Bethany flailed away at the heavily armoured cleric but did not manage to cause any damage. Ashelin finished the crab with several magical missiles. Once again returning to the brazier room the group opened the door to the west and ventured beyond to a short hallway that turned north and then turned west again. Ahead they could see a fountain carved into the corner of the hallway and appeared to be giant mouth. As Laneth approached a loud noise like a spring firing sounded and a piece of the fountain short out at Laneth, followed quickly by a large water elemental that emerged from the fountain. Once again Nick found the situation quite hilarious and kept his companions bolstered with his sharp wit. At the party slashed away at the elemental Viekko called upon one of his most power full spells and stepped forward casting Harm upon the Elemental as he reached out and touched it. The Elemental responded by slamming the cleric and staggering him. Keen Ears then finished the creature with a well place volley of arrows.

Investigate the Windsong Abbey – find the next shard

Session Summary
Fully expecting a room full of Red Caps, the adventurers ready their cold iron weapons and Bethany threw open the double doors at the bottom of the stairs. Beyond the portal was a large storage room strewn with broken barrels, shattered glass and coils of rope. Instead of the expected red caps however, the room contained six cloaked cultists wielding longbows. The cultists fired upon the adventurers and Bethany discovered that their arrows passed right through her metal armour striking her painfully. As some of the cultists began casting spells, Laneth tumbled into a flanking and hamstrung one of the cultists, while Bethany became enraged and attacked a pair of the enemies. Keen Ears took aim with his bow but suffered a catastrophic failure which Nick made light of with a witticism that lifted the party’s spirits.

One of the cultists tried to flee down a short corridor so Laneth gave chase and found a smaller storage room containing a very large clockwork creature that came to life and advanced, so the elven rogue retreated to the first room and alerted the group to this new foe. The clockwork golem rose and squeezed its way down the hallway and into the scene of the battle. Seeing Laneth then Golem picked up the elf and began crushing her in its vice-like grip while its sharp gears tore at her. Bethany dropped a cultist and then rounded on the golem, hacking at it to try and free Laneth, but luckily Keen Ears recovered from his earlier misfire and took off the golem’s head. The other cultists were soon felled including one that tried to flee south but was chased down by the angry barbarian.

Nick examined the arrows and discovered the metal heads were made from ghost iron which allowed them to travel through metal armor. The bard collected a bundle of arrows from the fallen cultists as well as several fine bows which were added to the party’s collection. The group made their way further into the dungeon level, passing a twenty foot wide cistern full of water, which appeared to gather rainwater from a drainage hole above. The adventueres turned west along a hallway and opened a door upon a small craft workshop. Among the debris they found two sets of fine craftsman’s tools as well as some valuable scrolls on gollemancy and how to disrupt golems.

The next chamber along the hallway was filled with tables and chairs along with four more cultists. Laneth reacted first to the new threat and ran past the cultists to block the south exit in case any of the cultists tried to flee.

But then the world seemed to go haywire for several moments as the walls seemed to grow and shrink. Or maybe it was the adventurers who grew and shrank, one moment they are as big as giants and the next as tiny as fairies. The cultists looked as confused as the adventurers. Finally after several moments the world became still again and battle was resumed with the map in the correct scale.
Keen Ears took aim and with his powerful bow, struck down one cultist, then wounded another. The cultists then fired upon Laneth and Bethany. Bethany once again flew into a rage and carved her way through the cultists. Nick took up his short bow and his razor wit, keeping his companions bolstered with the latter while stinging the cultists with the former. One of the cultists fled south and was cut down, but not before alerting a giantess who called out to her followers before advancing on the party. Bethany charged forward to meet the giantess and was speared for her trouble. Luckily Nock was nearby and used his magic to heal Bethany’s wounds. Laneth tumbled in behind the giantess and together Laneth and Bethany hacked at the enemy while Nick and Keen attacked from range. The giantess used a final spear attack against Bethany, Laneth and Keen before falling. Beyond the fallen giantess a huge mound of furs showed this was the creature’s bed chamber. Keen Ears looted the corpse and recovered a bounty of loot in coins and gems. Upon the wall hung a pair of cloaks, a pretty red one as well as a dirty brown cloak that glowed magically. Nick then burned through a healing wand on the many wounds suffered by Bethany, Laneth and Keen.

Following the hallway back to the east, the group found another group of cultists who were soon brought down. The southern door of this large room looked familiar to the magical door they had used the key and passcode on above.

Here we paused.

Investigate the Windsong Abbey – find the next shard

Session Summary
As the snakes stopped writhing on the head of the fallen medusa, the adventurers searched the corpse and discovered the key they had been looking for to the magical door on the ground floor. They decided to pass the tower on the way and deliver Coria back to her father. Bethany led the group back through Zorlarim’s chamber and the stairway leading down to the rooms below. At the bottom of a grand starcase was a small chamber that led to the ruined dining room where several ettins and giants had already been slain. Both Bethany and Laneth noticed something about the floor that was not quite right, so Laneth attempted to disable the subtle trap. The mechanism proved to be more difficult that the rogue expected however, as when Laneth stepped out onto the floor it gave way beneath her and the elf lass tumbled into a deep pit below. Luckily though, she managed to avoid the spikes sticking at the bottom. As Laneth scrambled back out of the pit, Bethany and Keen Ears easily vaulted the now gaping hole in the floor. As Viekko followed he noticed an ornate headdress hanging on the bannister. Although the significance of the religious artefact defeated his knowledge, he still pocketed the item intending to show it to his more learned colleagues later. Unfortunately, as Viekko grabbed the headdress off the banister, he triggered another trap which resulted in a loud booming noise that echoed about the room and almost crushed the party with its volume. A slightly deafened group emerged from the dining room and approached the tower where a relieved father and daughter were once again reunited. When shown the headdress, the priest recognised it as the raiment of the masked abbot of the Windsong Abbey and advised that it had useful magical properties that might aid the party. Viekko gladly donned the headdress and immediately felt more confident and charismatic. Coria then announced that she would escort her father back to Magnimar, and asked us that we try to capture Zorlarim alive and return him for trial. Her father then gave us the pass code for the tower and told us we could rest there in safety if required.

After seeing off the pair, the adventurers approached the magical door and Laneth interpreted the code phrase from poetry book which turning the magical key. The door swung open and revealed a stairway leading down into the darkness. At the bottom of the stairs, Bethany was able to detect many high pitched voices and related back to the group that the room sounded full of red caps. The party then readied their cold iron weapons and prepared to through open the doors….

Session Notes

Having broken through the conjured wall, the ettins triggered Viekko’s prepared spell and froze in their tracks at his command. Meanwhile upstairs in the meeting room Ashelin noticed her spells were having little impact on the Juju Zombie Bugbear and so hearing the commotion from the courtyard, decided to assist Viekko against the ettins.

Left to fight the Juju zombie, Keen Ears and Bethany both failed to strike the undead creature. Bethany felt the bite of the zombie’s wicked battleaxe and after a vicious hit, the barbarian felt her life force drained by the evil weapon. Nick heard Bethany’s scream of anguish and used his mechanical wings to fly to her aid. The Halfling tried to beckon the barbarian over so he could heal her, but Bethany decided to try and finish off the Bugbear. Her next swing missed the beast and as she prepared to meet her death, Keen Ears stepped forward and finished off the Juju zombie with a well-aimed arrow. Bethany grateful for the timely save, limped over to Nick for some healing.

Downstairs in the courtyard, Viekko applied his healing magic to Laneth, as Ashelin flew overhead and tossed a fireball in amongst the ettins, scorching the giantkin. Laneth, feeling revived by Viekko’s magic retrieved her crossbow and pinged a bolt of an ettin’s head. A second fireball from the mage finished off two of the ettins while the third emerged from the dining room and approached Viekko. Laneth tumbled in behind the ettin and drew its attention while Viekko stepped forward and smacked the creature about the heads. Nick continued to heal Bethany’s wounds, and feeling much better, the barbarian ran out and leapt from the balcony, landing next to the cleric. Keen Ears tried a similar move but with less poise, landing heavily in the courtyard below. Ashelin stayed clear of the fracas and bounced magic missiles off the ettin’s hide, which maddened the creature. The enraged giant tried to shove its way past Viekko and Bethany to get at Ashelin but the cleric finished it off, dropping the ettin at his feet.

Ashelin then heard a muffled voice coming from the tower. Viekko investigated the door at the base of the tower and hears a human voice from behind the door asking,
“What are you here for?”
“We are here to investigate what happened to the abbey."
“Well that seems obvious doesn’t it?”
Unhappy with this response Viekko throws up his hands and turns away from the tower,
“Fine, be that way!”
The door opened slightly and a dishevelled figure poked out his head and beckoned us to come in quickly. Inside the party noticed the walls were made of uncannily smooth stone with a spiral stair attached to the wall leading upwards into the tower. The man introduced himself as Casamir Azmeren and closing the door behind the adventurers turned and addressed the group.
“Thank Desnir you’re here.”
Viekko mumbled under his breath “Funny way of showing it.” So Ashelin and Nick decided to take over the questioning as Casamir lead the group up the stair to the top of the tower where in the middle of the room was a large sphere and the walls were covered in murals of butterflies, tangled script and images of angelic women. The mage broke out her art supplies and made a sketch of the room for the pathfinder’s records.
Ashelin then asked “Why did you stay in the tower when the abbey was attacked?"
Casamir replied “I came in to hide. It was safest in here so I locked the door and no one could get in. The tower is stronger than the rest of the abbey, even an earthquake couldn’t destroy it, and so I came here as it was safest.”
Laneth then asked “Can you give us a map of the abbey?”
“If you give me materials I can sketch the lower level of the abbey.” He offered.
Ashelin then handed over some of her art supplies and Casamir soon handed over a sketch of the abbey’s lower level. Casamir then explained what had happened to the abbey. An Elf named Ardathanatus had sent his monstrous minions to first infiltrate and then attack abbey so he could gain access to the secret vaults hidden beneath the abbey grounds. Initially Ardathanatus send a medusa disguised as an Elven princess to seduce the abbey’s leader Zolarem. When Ardathanatus then attacked the abbey, Casamir sent a magical calling to his daughter Coria, but when she answered the summons, Casamir saw her petrified by the medusa and carried away.
“You may rest here in the tower to recover, but please, help me by finding my daughter and returning her to me.” Pleaded Casamir. The group promised to find Coria and rescue her.

As the party bedded down to rest the night in the tower, Casamir also explained that there was a magically sealed door in the north west of the abbey that could only be opened with a special key and a combination. The medusa would most likely hold the key, and the combination could be found in Zolarem’s chambers. Ashelin then offered to teleport back to Magnimar to purchase spell components for Viekko so he could restore Bethany’s lost life force. The next day the group left the tower and returned to the balcony room, most by the nearby stairs, except for Keen Ears who needed to show he could climb successfully and Bethany who just decided to show off.
Nothing could be heard from the nearby door which opened onto a room smelling of decayed meat. A large window showed a view of the nearby coastline which a stairway lead down. Crossing the room another door opened onto a rectangular room containing several book cases. The books were uninteresting as Laneth discovered when the rogue tried to read one of the tomes and found the language was completely unknown to her. Casting a spell to comprehend languages Laneth realised the book was written in the abyssal tongue. Ashelin then found a book of poetry on a table next to a large armchair. As the mage flicked through the pages a sheaf of paper at the back held a curious poem which sounded strangely like a combination, so the mage pocketed it for later.

The next room mirrored the previous chamber and looked to be Zolarem’s bed chamber. The room was empty, so the party moved back to the meeting chamber and investigated the door to the south. They heard scraping sounds from behind the door so Viekko threw open the door revealing a pair of Vroks in the rectangular room beyond. Ashelin remembered her monster studies from magic school and quickly relayed all she knew about Vroks to the group. Viekko activated his aura of doom and moved into the room while Laneth tumbled into a flanking position with the cleric. Keen Ears drilled one of the creatures full of arrows and killed it. Bethany also moved into the room standing next to the cleric, seeing the creatures using magic, the barbarian became enraged which allowed her to avoid the effects of the Vrok’s spells. The creature then decided on a different tact and used it magical ability to summon another Vrok into the room. The summoned Vrok did not last long however as Keen Ears took aim and filled it with arrows. The Vrok then tried to toss the Bethany and Viekko out the windows to the sides of the chamber which would have meant certain death from the long falls to the rocks below. The creature was unsuccessful as the cleric and angry barbarian shook off the Vrok’s magical attack. The creature was soon killed so the adventures moved to the next door from which they could hear trickling water.

The door opened to reveal a finely tiled bathing chamber with a large circular bath that filled the room with warm steam making the room pleasantly warm. Inside the chamber was a redcap as well as a hill giant sleeping in the corner. Viekko was first through the door so the redcap focused its attacks on the cleric but could not get through Viekko’s heavy armour. Laneth tumbled in to flank the redcap while Ashelin tossed in a flaming sphere to burn the redcap. Bethany tumbled into the room, drew her new Cold Iron Earthshaker and pounded the little creature flat. The fight soon woke the hill giant who stepped forward and missed first Laneth and then Bethany with its great club. A snake headed woman suddenly materialised in the room and tried to cast a spell at Bethany but it took no affect in her enraged state. Viekko avoided the medusa’s gaze and delivered a massive burst of negative energy against the snake headed woman. Keen Ears then entered the room but was turned to stone by the medusa’s gaze. Laneth attempted to avoid the gaze by was also petrified. Ashelin stayed back in the safety of the outer room, and cast haste to increase her companion’s attacks. Bethany also avoided the medusa’s gaze so stepped forward to thump the creature. Viekko tried to move behind the medusa but was caught by the gaze and turned to stone. Ashelin then tossed a fireball into the room selecting not to harm Bethany in the blast and finished off the medusa. Bethany then stepped forward and smashed the hill giant into jelly. She then called out to Ashelin that it was safe and the pair searched the bath chamber for a way to restore their companions. Luckily they found several pots of stone slave, enough to restore Keen, Laneth and Viekko. They also discovered the statue of a young woman in the room and when they restored her with the last stone salve discovered they had found Coria who thanked her. The adventurers told her of their pledge to Casamir to find her.
“Thanks for saving me, can you tell me where my father is?” Asked Coria.
“He is downstairs in the tower.” Ashelin replied.
“I have to go and get my father out of here.”
“We will reunite you shortly.”

Upon the medusa’s corpse was found the dooms door key, therefore the party believed they had everything needed to open the magical door.

Investigate the Windsong Abbey – find the next shard

Session Notes
At the gates to the outer wall, the party spotted a shape in the air which turned into Viekko swooping down on one of his undead wyverns. The cleric joined the group and then ordered his creation to find a roost on a nearby mountain. The adventurers then moved along the road towards the front of the abbey which appears to be partially destroyed with many of the walls lying broken in ruins. Laneth investigated the front entrance while the rest of the group checked a broken section of wall finding a ruined cathedral. Laneth spotted a dead fall trap within the entry way containing several boulders suspended above the alcove, so joined the others and reported her findings.

As the party stood considering the broken wall, Viekko casts a number of spells upon himself to enhance his combat abilities. The group decided to enter the ruined cathedral but as they moved into the room, Bethany heard mumbled conversation from above. A wall of fog appeared and blocked off the exit through the broken wall, while a pair of strange creatures dropped into the room and attacked.

The creatures appeared to be bundles of intestines wrapped around a tooth-filled maw which Ashelin identified as Qlippoth. Viekko, Laneth and Bethany surrounded one of the creatures while Ashelin dropped a flaming sphere on it as well. Viekko attempted to bestow curse on one of the creatures but failed to affect it. The cleric then used a wand of lighting on the other but most of the damage seemed to be absorbed. Keen Ears stepped back and unloaded a massive volley of arrows which killed one of the Qlippoth. The other was dispatched by a combination of slashing from Bethany’s sword and some well-placed stabs from Laneth which flanked the second Qlippoth with Bethany.

At the end of the battle, Laneth then moved to the front of the group and advanced along a wide ruined hallway that ended in a closed door, however an open archway drew the elf’s attention. The archway opened onto a courtyard in the middle of the abbey complex. The buildings surrounding the archway looked destroyed and much of the structure stood in ruins. However, in the middle of the courtyard stood a tall narrow tower that looked to be in good repair, and had not been damaged. The tower resembled a lighthouse, and appeared to have no windows. The only entrance was a pair of double doors at the base, which Laneth moved towards. A chittering noise behind the elf drew her attention to a low balcony above the archway she had entered, where four redcaps stood brandishing crossbows pointed menacingly at Laneth. The elf reacted by scrambling up a column and onto the balcony to confront the redcaps. Bethnay moved around under the balcony then also climbed up to the far side of the redcaps. Ashelin flew up to their level and conjured a long snake-like line of fire upon the redcaps. Keen Ears having no direct line of fire, delayed and then attempted to climb the balcony but slipped and fell back to the courtyard. Viekko moved to the base of the balcony exposing the redcaps to his aura of doom. The cleric then conjured his aura of destruction, affecting enemies and friends alike. The redcaps dropped their crossbows and took out scythes cutting Bethany. Laneth made good use of the aura of destruction critically killing one of the redcaps. Bethany drew her cold iron Earthshaker and killed two more of the creatures. The final redcaps chose to flee and slipped past Bethany into the room off the balcony. Meanwhile a loud bellow was heard from bellow as an Ettin emerged from the room below the balcony. Viekko cast a spell upon the creature making it feel terrible remorse, but before the spell could activate, Keen Ears stepped back and felled it with his bow. As the creature fell, Keen Ears spotted another ettin in the dining room beyond the opening. Another pair of the ettins also appeared and Viekko realised they now faced three of the giant creatures and so stepped up to the ettin and swaved goodbye, speaking to the creature in its own language thanks to his spell of toungues cast earlier. The cleric then conjured a wall of stone blocking the entrances to the courtyard in a fifty-foot curving wall. A frustrated Keen Ears having nothing to shoot, decided to join his companions on the balcony.

Meanwhile Laneth had chased the redcap into the room off the balcony and found a large meeting room filled with chairs decorated with murals to different deities of the area. Bethany joined Laneth in the room and Laneth dropped the redcap, then the pair turned to find the room was occupied by a Juju Zombie Bugbear Fighter and three cloth-wrapped mummies. The bugbear seeing the elf screamed in anger and drew upon Laneth with a longbow shooting the rogue. Ashelin flew into the room and conjured balls of lightning on the three mummies who had moved to attack Bethany and Laneth. Laneth tumbled past the mummies and attacked the bugbear but missed. Keen Ears ran into the room and into a corner, drawing a slam from one of the mummies on the way passed. The other two mummies slammed the barbarian, one of which infected Bethany with mummy rot. The now angry barbarian dropped the earthshaker and drew her sword, cutting down the two mummies. The bugbear stepped away and scored a damaging shot upon Laneth, who decided to retreat, fleeing back over the balcony to ask Viekko for healing. The cleric was holding a spell in case the ettins broke through the wall and so gestured to his pocket and invited the cleric to retrieve the wand there.
“If you want to live, then take my wand.”
The elf retrieved the wand then attempted to use her skill as a rogue to activate it but failed.

After dropping the mummies, Bethany moved up to attack the bugbear, who dropped its bow and took up a wicked looking greataxe which it used to carve strips off the barbarian. The last mummy chased Keen Ears into the corner where Keen Ears dropped it, then scored a critical hit, filling the bugbear with arrows. The bugbear remained standing so Ashelin moved all three of her lighting balls onto the bugbear. The lightning did not seem to affect the creature so the mage tried a pair of scorching rays with similar results, and then in frustration fired a volley of magic missiles from her wand. As the missiles were absorbed by the creature Ashelin swore in rage at the zombie which impressed the barbarian as Bethany didn’t think the cultured mage knew that kind of language. In shock the barbarian and the archer both missed the bugbear with their next attacks. Below in the courtyard the ettins finally broke through the stone wall so Viekko triggered his spell commanding the ettins to stop. The power of the cleric’s command stopped the ettins in their tracks.

Here we paused. (With a Juju Zombie Bugbear Fighter and three ettins to overcome)

Session Notes
After purchasing cold iron weapons, the group retired to Nick’s cottage by the sea to spend the night before continuing on to the Windsong Abbey. During the day Laneth arrived from Magnimar and joined the party. The weapon smith’s stock of cold iron weapons was running low, but Laneth managed to find a wicked looking battle-axe to add to her arsenal.

In the morning Ashelin conjured spectral mounts and the group rode along the coast to the outskirts of the abbey precinct. When they arrived they saw smoke rising from the abbey in the distance as well as fires burning randomly among the houses of the village outside the abbey wall. Laneth and Keen dismounted and scouted among the houses while Ashelin, Nick and Bethany waited near a burnt out house. Coming to the crossroads, Laneth detected snoring coming from a nearby house and when she investigated found a sleeping giant within the building. Laneth left Keen to keen watch and returned to the others to tell them about the sleeping giant, then stealthily moved in beside the giant and hefted her new battle-axe and removed the creatures head. The sound roused a second giant who poked its dead in through a nearby doorway and then roared in anger.

Bethany spurred her horse into action and rode forward dismounting beside Keen Ears. Nick also rode forward but then activated his mechanical wings and flew into the air above the house. Ashelin spurred her horse forward and then dismounted as well. The second giant was soon brought down. Laneth crept out through the front door and along the road toward the abbey, but then from either direction came further bellows as six ettins, and two more hill giants lumbered towards the house. Bethany took up position in the doorway and called for everyone to enter behind her. Nick flew up onto the rooftop and took position with his short bow. Ashelin dropped a confusion spell on one groups of giantkin and then moved into the house behind the barbarian. Keen ears shot at an approaching ettin and then also ran inside the house. Laneth decided to try the next house and made her way through the dwelling and out the back door, circling back to the rear of the first house. The confused hill giants attacked each other, but the ettins moved up to the house and began beating down the walls. Laneth climbed up onto the house and took position on the roof, drawing and loading a crossbow. Bethany stepped out hacked down an ettin in the doorway, while Keen Ears dropped the other with his deadly bow. Ashelin then began casting a spell and a circle of fire leapt up around the house rising up twenty-feet high. The ettins were badly burned and two of them decided to circle the house looking for a way in. The third broke in through the wall but then fell to Bethany’s sword. The two hill giants fought each other until one shook off its confusion and tried to flee, but was brought down by the other giant. Keen ears took aim at one of the ettins and killed it, then turned and dropped its companion. The final ettin took a bolt from Laneth’s crossbow and decided to flee, as arrows and bolts zipped by it from Nick and Laneth. Nick tried to goad the confused hill giant into to the ring of fire, but the hill giant just stood and slammed a rock into its own head to try to end the confusion but then was put out of its misery as Keen Ears filled it with arrows.

The group retreated into the house to rest but a few minutes later they were disturbed when a large rock slammed down through the roof. Nick flew up to the roof and reported three ettins and two hill giants were behind the abbey wall lobbing rocks at the group. Laneth slipped out the back door and stealthily made her way along the houses and across the open ground to the wall. Bethany followed behind the elf, keeping her distance so to not attract attention. Keen ears and Ashelin crossed the road and moved along the line of houses, while Nick flew across to the last house before the wall and started shooting with his short bow. Ashelin cast a spell upon herself and flew up to the rooftop with Nick. Keen Ears tried to follow but slipped on the roof and fell painfully to the ground. Laneth made it to the wall but also slipped and fell back to the ground. The giantkin seeing where the arrows were coming from threw rocks and one clipped Nick painfully. Ashelin cast her most powerful spell causing lighting to arc between all of the ettins, causing them great pain. Bethany made a dash for the wall while Laneth scrambled up one side then sneakily tumbled down the far side unnoticed by the nearby hill giant. Bethany then scrambled up onto the wall and hacked one of the ettins killing it. The other giant kin closed in and thumped the barbarian with their greatclubs. Nick and Keen Ears continued to fire from the rooftop while Ashelin flew over to the wall and killed an ettin with a ray of frost. Keen ears drew on the final giant and dropped it. Nick then flew over to the wall and used a healing wand to heal Bethany’s injuries.

Session Notes
The additions to the mansion proceeded well under the supervision of the heroes, as they spent some downtime pursuing various projects. While discussing their options for the journey to the Windsong Abbey, Ashelin mentioned that she could learn a spell to conjure up temporary mounts for the party. Nick chimed in saying somewhere to sleep would be nice as well, so in addition the mage also learned how to conjure a tiny hut for the adventurers to sleep in. Bethany was worried that Nick had gone soft, as the barbarian was not afraid of roughing it in the wild. Under the pretense of supplying meals for the group as they traveled, Nick purchased a large amount of trail rations which he stuffed into his bag of holding. The hungry Halfling was worried that when it came to mealtime he might have to share with the others, so ended up purchasing a month’s supply of food for the two-day journey.

When everything was ready four of the party mounted their conjured horses, leaving Rock, Veikko and Laneth to catch up when they could, most likely riding Viekko’s undead Wyverns. The slightly smaller group had an uneventful ride along the Lost Coast road to the coastal town of Sandpoint. The guards at the gate watched the group enter but did not challenge them, so they continued along Market Street and stopped outside the Rusty Dragon Inn. As they entered Nick and Keen noticed an attractive woman behind the bar, while Ashelin and Bethany noticed a group of patrons surrounding a gypsy woman, who looked to be telling them a story.
As they approached the bar, the lady addressed them.
“Welcome to the Rusty Dragon, how may I be of assistance?”
Nick remembered that the Rusty Dragon was renowned for its spicy dishes and so replied.
“Can you bring me something tasty and hot?”
Ashelin then said “We are headed to Windsong Abbey and are looking for a place to stay the night.”
“Ahh. In that case, you may want to talk to the peddler over there.” Replied the bar tender pointing to the gypsy surrounded by a small crowd. Meanwhile Nick had been enjoying the local scenery and made an off-hand comment to prolong the exchange.
“Quick question, is this inn for sale perhaps?”
“No. I am quite happy here.” Came the amused reply.
Keen Ears stood sniggering behind the Halfling, openly ogling the barkeep, so Bethany took charge of the situation and her wayward companions, grabbing both males by the ears and dragging them over to the crowd around the gypsy.
“Come on lads, leave the nice lady alone.”
As the group approached the peddler, a few of the patrons shook their heads as if in disbelief of what they had heard and wandered away from the crowd. Seeing the party the peddler greeted them and asked.
“Hello. Do you want to hear about my brush with death?”
Ashelin greeted her warmly in Varisian and so we took a table so Nick could enjoy his spicy meal, and we could hear the peddler’s tale.
“I was traveling near the abbey when I noticed smoke and detoured to investigate.” She began. “As I approached I found a small strangely pointed cap of crimson that looked like it was soaked in blood. Not a moment later a boulder the size of horse landed not ten feet from me! It came from a fourty-foot giant, and seeing the giant I fled, running for my life! I only briefly saw it and I fled immediately.”
Upon hearing this story the party questioned the peddler to find out more information.
“Are giants common to the area?”
“No, they are not common, usually staying near hills and mountain ranges. I don’t know why there would be a giant at the abbey.”
When thanked for sharing her tale, the peddler reached into her pack and retrieved a small bundle of blood-soaked cloth.
“Here.” She said, handing over the object. “This is the cap I found. I believe it came from a redcap.”
“Are redcaps common to the area?”
“No, but I believe they may be responsible for the smoke at the abbey. The outer buildings looked damaged like they had been through an earthquake, but the central tower was intact and I could see someone moving around inside there from a lighted window.”
“Are you going to the abbey?” She asked us.
“Yes.” We replied.
“In that case, you should make sure you have cold iron, to deal with the redcaps.” She suggested.
After lunch, the group again thanked the peddler for the advice and ventured into Sandpoint to secure some cold iron weapons. Keen Ears managed to buy a few bundles of arrows with cold iron tips, while Bethany tracked down a large cold iron club known as an earth shaker. Nick however spent the afternoon perusing the local real estate and ended up buying a tidy little seaside cottage, calling it his country retreat.

Session Summary
As the body of the Shax Priestess fell to the floor, the party sighed in relief and began to explore the cells at the far end of the chamber. The southernmost cell held a figure dressed in the tattered robes of a Sarendae Priest.
As we approached the priest rose and asked “Oh are you here to rescue me?”
Bethany replied in the affirmative, and beckoned Laneth over to deal with the cell lock, which the elf deftly picked.
“How long have you been trapped here?”
The priest replied. “Thank you for the rescue, the priestess captured me days ago and kept me imprisoned. Could you give me a weapon so I can help deal with any other cultists?”
The priest seemed sincere so Laneth handed him a spare dagger.
As Viekko approached the other cell to investigate the priest surprised everyone in the party when he suddenly attacked the cleric. It was then the image of the priest changed as the figure dropped its disguise and stood before us in its true form; that of a succubus. The creature looked strangely familiar, and when the party thought back thought back to their journey to the Lady’s Light, they remembered a broken empty statue that had once held a succubus trapped. Could this be that very succubus they wondered? Before the creature could be subdued, the embattled cleric stepped forward and banished the succubus to the Rune Forge plane, bringing a cry of anguish from the creature as it faded from view and a frustrated gasp from the Barbarian who was preparing to grapple the creature and imprison it for questioning.

In an act of atonement the sheepish cleric cast a spell so he could commune with the spirit of the vanquished priestess of Shax, asking the spirit several questions.
“Why were you killing the priests of sarendae?”
“Because my mistress asked me to.”

“Who is your mistress?
“The messenger from our master”

“What is the name of your master?”
“Shax”

“What is the name of your mistress?”
“I do not know, she called herslef Alav

“Do you have anything to do with Windsong Abbey?”
“No”

Feeling rather unenlightened the party reported their success to Cassady of the city watch, who gladly handed over the reward of 3000 gold pieces, which the party decided to donate to the followers of Sarendae so they could rebuild their shrine. Afterwards, the group returned to the mansion where a flurry of construction was underway. Waiting for the adventurers was a messenger with as package from Shelia. Ashelin accepted the delivery and opened it to find another ioun stone and a message in Sheila’s handwriting.

I heard you were heading towards the next shard at Windsong abbey; you will need this ioun stone.
I have a few requests: One the abbey used to be the home of a multitude of priesthoods, and the temple of Desna would appreciate if the villains who took over were defeated completely. Also collect a sliver of wood from Calistria’s chair in the Windsong council chambers and return is to my office.
Regards Shelia

After a brief discussion the party agreed to the requests so the messenger bowed and left to give our answer to Shelia. The group then retired to the mansion to prepare for the journey to the Windsong Abbey, and also spend some time working on the mansion.
